Congressman Gonzalez Breaks Bread with Troops in Afghanistan during Thanksgiving Holiday

November 27, 2017
Press Release

WASHINGTON – Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) was one of only eight members of Congress that celebrated Thanksgiving with service members stationed in Afghanistan. Over the course of the trip, the delegation visited key military capabilities and personnel in Poland, Qatar, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.

“I was both humbled and honored to spend Thanksgiving with the brave men and women of our U.S. armed forces in Afghanistan,” Congressman Gonzalez said. “This is the time of the year when loved ones come together to celebrate all that we have. Those serving overseas sacrifice their holidays to keep us and our allies safe. I want these American heroes to know that we are forever grateful for their service to our country. Spending time with them during Thanksgiving was both eye opening and heartwarming. I learned so much about the work our U.S. armed forces undertake at military installations across the world. As I continue to serve in Congress, I vow to make the needs of service members, veterans, and their families my top priorities.”

Congressman Gonzalez, the son of a U.S. Merchant Marine and Korean War veteran, is a strong advocate for service members, veterans, and military families.

The bipartisan delegation included: Congressmen Trent Kelly (MS-01), Neal Dunn (FL-02), David Kustoff (TN-08), Richard Hudson (NC-08), Evan Jenkins (WV-03), Congresswomen Nanette Diaz Barragan (CA-44), and Claudia Tenney (NY-22). Congressman Gonzalez and his fellow members returned to Washington, D.C. after Thanksgiving as the U.S. House of Representatives reconvenes for votes on November 28, 2017.
