Congressman Gonzalez Announces Winner of 2023 Congressional App Challenge

BROWNSVILLE, TEXAS – Today, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-34) announced the winners of the annual Congressional App Challenge (CAC) competition for the 34th Congressional District of Texas. The CAC highlights the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in the U.S. and gives middle and high school students an opportunity to hone and showcase their coding and technology skills.  

"I would like to thank all of our participants this year for their time, effort, and innovation,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “Each entry was a testament to the talent and potential South Texas students have to offer. What’s more, each contestant displayed a true desire to not only enhance their coding skills but also to apply their knowledge to real-world problems their communities face daily. Congratulations to all our winners!” 

There were 61 total CAC entries from students in the 34th Congressional District of Texas.  

The list of the winners is below: 

1st Place Winner:  

Aaron Garza 

App Name: Doctor’s Aid 

App Description: “My app was created with the main purpose of helping doctors make document by quickly turning speech to text, translating, and briefly rewriting it. This app can be used by people all around the globe of any language (Right now it's only for 3 languages). In the past, doctors would actually hire scribes, typers, and translators to help them write any documents, journals, letters, and speeches.”

Gabriel Dougherty 

App Name: Skript 

App Description: “My app teaches people a new type of code to beginners.”

Jesus Ibarra 

App Name: CyberScenarios 

App Description: “My app has different scenarios that gives you a little bit of information on things like phishing, adware, etc. Once you read the information, then you'll have to figure out what's considered malicious and what is not. If you get it wrong, then it'll give you explanation on why that choice is wrong and it'll give you hints on how to avoid that type of method.”

App Name: Talk2Understand 

App Description: “My app is able to take someone's statement and translate it into a different language either orally or through text.”

App Name: STEM Recipes 

App Description: “My app, STEM Recipes, has experiments categorized from either difficulty and popularity with brief descriptions and a video tutorial for each of the experiments. The user will scroll to find an experiment that they may be interested in and watch a video that allows for the user to follow at their own pace.”
