Congressman Gonzalez Announces Beginning of the 2021 Tax Filing Period

January 24, 2022

Washington, D.C. – On Monday, January 24, 2022, Congressman Vicente Gonzalez (TX-15) announced the beginning of the 2021 tax filing period which runs through Monday, April 18th, 2022. Congressman Gonzalez advises residents of the 15th District of Texas to file early, closely review Internal Revenue Service (IRS) updates, and take advantage of resources like the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help with filing an accurate return.

The IRS recently issued several advisories regarding changes to the tax code as well as COVID-19-related staffing issues that could possibly delay the processing of returns.

"I urge all South Texans to use tools available from the IRS to make sure they file an accurate return as soon as possible. Resources include the free IRS app, visiting IRS.gov, utilizing the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and using a direct deposit account when available", stated Congressman Gonzalez.

The IRS has issued advisories reminding taxpayers of key items to keep in mind when filing taxes. Here is a 5-point checklist from the IRS to help residents file an accurate tax return for a speedy process and refund delivery:

1. File an accurate return and use e-file and direct deposit to avoid delays

2. For an accurate return, collect all documents before preparing a tax return; make sure stimulus payment and advance Child Tax Credit information is accurate

3. Avoid lengthy phone delays; use online resources before calling the IRS

4. Waiting on a 2020 tax return to be processes? Special tip to help with e-filing a 2021 tax return
